Amtrak Plans to Restore Passenger Train Service to Sanford

Enacted into law on October 16, 2008, the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008 (PRIIA) (Public Law 110-453) reauthorizes the nation’s intercity passenger rail provider, Amtrak, and establishes new programs and policies to strengthen the U.S. intercity passenger rail system.

Section 226 of PRIIA requires Amtrak to develop, by July 16, 2009, a plan for restoring passenger rail service between New Orleans, Louisiana and Sanford, Florida. The plan is to include a projected timeline and projected costs, and identify any legislative changes required to support reinstatement of service.

It's all aboard for the AutoTrain shuttle

With the vote last week by the Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency to fund the Sanford Amtrak AutoTrain Shuttle for the rest of the Fiscal Year, the successful trial service will now run through September 30th.

During its recent two-month trial funded by the City’s Economic Development Office, the service brought over a 1,000 Amtrak AutoTrain passengers into Historic Sanford’s city center. A survey conducted last week among the shuttle’s passengers has brought home the economic impact of the service:
  • 85% of the passengers bought a meal during their visit
  • 33 % made a purchase
  • 100 % said they would recommend the service to their friends
  • 90% said they would take the shuttle on a future visit
  • 100% preferred using the shuttle over remaining at the AutoTrain station
A survey of 60 users of the shuttle was completed by City staff.

"I believe this service will only get more popular as word spreads among AutoTrain passengers," said Bob Tunis, the City’s economic development director.

The service operates at twenty minute intervals in each direction, from 12.00 p.m. until 2.40 p.m. daily. The Amtrak AutoTrain carries over 250,000 passengers in and out of Sanford annually.
