Downtown Utilities Project

Major Relocate Project

Prepare for Major Construction Project in historic downtown Sanford - Relocating Utilities to Make Area Conducive for Future Development.

Sanford residents, business owners and visitors you will start to see some major construction activity within the next few weeks in downtown Sanford between East 1st Street & Seminole Boulevard - between Sanford Avenue and Palmetto Avenue.

Cathcart Construction will be relocating the stormwater, sanitary sewer, water and electrical lines in that area. The utilities in this area are over 100 years old in some places and in desperate need of replacement.

The construction will affect public parking in the city's (gravel) lot, traffic on Seminole Boulevard, Sanford Avenue, Palmetto Avenue & Commercial Street.

The public should expect detours in the affected areas of construction.  This project is estimated to take up to 6 months. The project cost $1,036,914.50 and is being funded through city storm water and utility fees.

Updated information re: Road Closure due to relocates of utility lines in downtown.

The contractor is expected to begin relocation work on Palmetto Ave. between Commercial Ave. and Seminole Blvd. on March 14.

While efforts will be made to maintain two way traffic on this section of Palmetto Ave. due to the depth of the excavation and anticipated high ground water elevations, the road may be reduced to single lane southbound traffic during the work week.

This means traffic will need to use Palmetto Ave. to Commercial Ave. west to Hood Ave. to access the courthouse parking lot and traffic to Marina Isle will need to use Sanford Ave. to Seminole Blvd. to Palmetto Ave. - entrance to Marina Isle.

Construction project plans/timelines are/can be fluid at times, we thank you for your patience, if information changes as this project progresses.
