W. Seminole Blvd. Road Closures
RiverWalk Construction Project Road Closure information
RiverWalk Construction Project - Major Road Closure begins Monday, March 11th thru September 30, 2019
At almost three and a half miles long, the construction of Sanford’s $14 million dollar RiverWalk seawall is underway. As a result, starting Monday, March 11, W. Seminole Blvd. (formerly known as 17-92) will be closed to thru traffic until approximately September 30, 2019 -- open to local traffic only. Expect detours.
The road will be closed approximately 5 months while the pipe crossings along the entire stretch of W. Seminole Blvd. are being replaced. These pipes (some are over 80 years old) need to be replaced due to their age. There are eleven pipe crossings in all. The road closures will be completed in 3 phases along with new traffic patterns for each phase.
The first phase of the rolling road closures for this project will be closed from Mangoustine Avenue to Regatta Shores starting Monday, March 11th. Expect W. Seminole Blvd. to be closed in this section for approximately 6 weeks.
Traffic Pattern Phase 1 – W. Seminole Blvd. will be open from the west at Oak Drive to allow local traffic into Regatta Shores and Venetian Bay. The road will be closed to thru traffic for those traveling east and not into Regatta Shores or Venetian Bay, drivers will have to turn right on Oak Drive. Traffic going west from Regatta Shores and Venetian Bay to CR-15/17-92 will not be impeded.
The second phase road closure will began on Monday 5/20/19. Regatta Shores residents and first responders will be the only ones effected by this change. All entry and exiting from Regatta Shores will come and go through the east end of the project. Seminole Blvd Thru traffic is still not permitted. The detour on CR 15 to SR 46 still applies.
The third and final phase will be between Walnut Crest Run and the Central Florida Zoo. Heading west toward I-4 once you get past Walnut Crest Run the culverts become larger and in some cases deeper, which place more demand on the construction team.
Traffic Pattern Phase 3 – Between Walnut Crest Run and the Central Florida Zoo the road will be closed. The residents of The Preserves will have to use W. Seminole Blvd. and drive east.
Wharton-Smith, Inc., the project contractor will be expediting the road crossings as to not inconvenience the residents in these affected areas. This is a huge project and the exact dates of detours and closures will be determined by completion.
The RiverWalk project is of regional importance, critical to the connectivity of many communities. It will be an integral part of the statewide bike and pedestrian network. Located along beautiful Lake Monroe’s south shore (a state designated scenic highway), this project will provide one of the most pristine bike and pedestrian experiences second to none in Florida, offering residents and visitors a spectacular view of Florida’s unique and unspoiled waterway, right here in Sanford!
The RiverWalk trail will remain open the entire time during construction. We ask that the public be patient while we construct this exciting new chapter in Sanford’s history. Construction timeline
