The 10-week City of Sanford Citizens Academy provides an opportunity for citizens to learn about City government through first-hand experience and gain exposure to the wide range of government functions, services and activities. (This is a free public information program).
The Citizens Academy will be held weekly on Wednesday evenings, 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. Participants are expected to attend at least 8 of the 10 sessions to receive a Certificate of Completion at a graduation ceremony at the City Commission Meeting, 300 N. Park Ave. Sanford, FL.
Graduates of the Citizens Academy, there is an active Facebook Alumni Group called Sanford FL Citizens Academy Alumni Group.
Class 15 will be offered February 5 - April 8, 2020 (Wednesday evenings for 10 weeks 6pm-8pm).
Accepting applications now until January 23, 2020 on a first come, first serve basis.

To inform citizens and stakeholders of the operations of city government and what is involved in delivering and maintaining services to the citizens of Sanford.
Learn first-hand about Sanford’s city government and to create an environment of informed citizens who can become volunteers for appointed boards, task forces and commissions.
Class Size –
Classes are limited to 35 participants. The Citizens Academy is open to anyone interested, must be 18 years old to participate.
Curriculum – A 2 hour weekly session, Wednesday nights for 10 weeks, ending with a graduation ceremony at the City Commission Meeting. Each session will begin at 6:00 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. Please note the various locations (locations subject to change):

It was a great experience. I was a little skeptical at first, but after making the commitment, attending the academy, it was a fantastic experience. The information I learned about the city's history, police and fire dept, utilities was more than I imagined I would be informed about from the staff of each dept. The staff was very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions we had, even after the meeting.
I appreciate the opportunity to learn more about what the city does and I hope they are valued and well-compensated.

I found all the presenters who work for the City of Sanford as department managers to be professional and very knowledgeable about what they do. It made me smile while out working in my yard and a Sanford Utility truck drove by and the driver took the time to smile and wave. Small acts of friendliness from city workers leaves a lasting impression.
It was one of the best decisions that I made as a resident. I now have a better understanding of how the city operates. I loved how staff portrayed teamwork. It made me proud to say, I'm from Sanford!
